Liam Steel - Choreographer & Director
Liam is a multi-award winning director and choreographer who gained an international reputation as being one of Europe's leading physical theatre practitioners. His freelance and choreographic work has included creating productions for the Royal National Theatre, Nottingham Playhouse, The Lyric Hammersmith, Birmingham Rep, Northampton Theatre Royal, The Royal Court, Headlong Theatre Co, Tamasha Theatre Co, Manchester Royal Exchange, The Royal Shakespeare Company, and six productions at the Library Theatre, Manchester. He is a core collaborator at Regents Park Open Air Theatre and has worked on five productions there over the last four seasons including co-directing and choreographing the acclaimed production of Sondheim's INTO THE WOODS in 2010, which was awarded a prestigious Olivier award for Best Musical Revival and was remounted at the Delacorte Theatre in New York's Central Park in Summer 2012.
Opera direction includes Opera Holland Park, The Royal College of Music, 3 productions for English Touring Opera, and a special commission from the Royal Opera House. He has created numerous award winning contemporary dance commissions, choreographed for West End Musical Theatre; and directed International New Circus companies (including working as a guest director for Cirque du Soleil). He has created a number of large-scale site-specific pieces, including a commission to celebrate the re-opening of London's Royal Festival Hall (performed to an audience of over 10,000 people over two evenings), and staging London's Olympic torch handover event with over 500 singers, dancers and circus performers. In 2009 Liam staged the theatrical extravaganza BEN HUR for the O2 arena and stadiums worldwide and in 2011 the production was remounted as a permanent fixture at the Nuova Fiera in Rome.
He was Artistic Director of Stan Won't Dance - one of the country's most acclaimed Dance Theatre Companies, with whom he created five pieces. Prior to forming his own company he was probably most widely recognized for his groundbreaking work as a performer with Frantic Assembly; Complicité, and with DV8 Physical Theatre - where he was a core member for eight years (1992-2000), working on five international touring productions and the Emmy award winning film version of ENTER ARCHILLES.
In the commercial sector his work includes TV advertising campaigns for Lycra, LYNX deodorant; BAILEY'S IRISH CREAM; ORANGE Telecommunications; BOOTS CHEMIST and the 2012 London Olympic campaign for COCA COLA.
He created all the musical staging and choreography for the film version of the musical LES MISERABLES - winner of the Golden Globe for Best Film and nominated for 8 Academy Awards and 9 BAFTAs including in their Best Film categories.
