Liam Steel - Choreographer & Director
Liam works as a freelance director, choreographer, actor and designer and is artistic director of his own company Stan Won’t Dance. The company toured its inaugural piece Sinner throughout Britain in 2004/05 to huge critical and public acclaim and went on to complete an extensive tour of North America and Canada in 2006, being nominated for the Canadian DORA award for Best Choreography and winning a GLAAD Media award for most outstanding New York Theatre – off Broadway. The company’s second piece Revelations toured middle scale venues in the autumn of 2006. The company are Artists in Residence at London’s South Bank Centre, and the company were central in the celebration of the re-opening of the Royal Festival Hall in 2007, creating a series of duets entitled Skylon Spirit for the opening weekend and a large outdoor spectacular with over a hundred performers entitled Off the Wall.
From 1992 – 2000 Liam was a core member of DV8 Physical Theatre working as a performer, assistant director and designer for the company. Productions worked on included MSM; Enter Achilles (including the Emmy award winning film version); Bound to Please; The Happiest Day of My Life (also designer -Time Out Design of the Year 1999) and The Cost of Living . Numerous acting credits include work with Nottingham Playhouse; The Royal Court; Manchester Royal Exchange; The Kosh; Volcano Theatre Co; Nigel Charnock and Company; Frantic Assembly; Royal National Theatre; The David Glass Ensemble and 3 tours with Complicité.
Theatre direction and dance choreographic work includes The Magic Flute for English Touring Opera, The Crucible and The Tempest at the Open Air Theatre, Regent's Park, Ben Hur Live!, Imagine This - West End, The Singing Circle - Helen Chadwick/Royal Opera House, The Olympic Torch Event - Royal Festival Hall; L’Infedelta Delusa (Country Matters) - English Touring Opera; Absolute Beginners - Lyric Hammersmith; Crazy Gary, Bare Bones Dance Company – The 5 Man Show; Hymns, (also designer) (Revised version: 2005 and original: 1999) - Lyric Hammersmith/Frantic Assembly; Knots - CoisCeim Dance Theatre (awarded Best Production 2005 Dublin International Fringe Festival, Edinburgh Fringe First Winner 2006); Hooked (also designer) - Blueyedsoul dance Company; Dirty Wonderland - Brighton International Festival/Frantic Assembly; Paradise Lost - Northampton Theatre Royal and 2006 Oxford Stage Company re-tour; Pericles - RSC/Cardboard Citizens Theatre Co; Strictly Dandia, (for which he was awarded a Herald Angel award for outstanding achievement at the Edinburgh International Festival) - Tamasha Theatre Co/Lyric Hammersmith; Dalston Songs - Helen Chadwick Group/BAC; The Shooky - Birmingham Repertory Theatre; Devotion - Theatre Centre; Frankenstein - Blue Eyed Soul Dance Company; Heavenly - Frantic Assembly/Soho Theatre (2002) and Off Broadway production, New York (2004); Vurt - Contact Theatre Manchester (Nominated for 5 Manchester Evening News Awards, including Best Production); The Fall of the House of Usher - Graeae Theatre Company; Look at Me - Theatre Centre; Sparkleshark - Royal National Theatre; The Flight Restless Dance Co. (also designer) (Adelaide Festival-Australia); 15 Degrees and Rising, Circus Space; guest director on Saltimbanco for Cirque du Soleil, and six productions for the Library Theatre, Manchester -The Secret Garden; Beauty and the Beast; The Ghosts of Scrooge; the 2002/03 production of Tom's Midnight Garden (TMA Award – Best Production for Children and Young People); Oliver Twist; and the 2007 re-mount production of Tom’s Midnight Garden.
Liam is currently co-directing Into the Woods at the Open Air Theatre Regents Park and Orpheus in the Underworld for RCM.
